"Every player wants to retire at the top of his
international game. Had I also retired while playing international cricket, I
could have given a retirement speech, but fate had something else in store for
me"…”Sachin Tendulkar stopped me from retiring in 2007”
- Virender Sehwag, in an interview around his trifling/soft
exit from International cricket.
Sehwag has always been a coveted asset in Indian cricket,
and enjoyed ovation from thousands of spectators every time he walked in out of
the ground. He has had consummate achievements in International cricket but,
ironically, like Sachin, his exit was not what any hero would like it to be.
If life is an evolution, a journey with consistent change
as a constant, how can goals be stagnant? Think of parallels between Sehwag’s
story and many we witness in different walks of life, be it business, politics,
profession or others. The success trajectory remains favorable and consistent
for few while elusive for a most. Not just individuals, organizations suffer
similar phenomenon and face consequences..
Surprising enough is the fact that most get signals much
earlier than the D-day. These signals call for recognizing and negotiating forthcoming
changes that seem temporarily ominous. Inertia, procrastination, lack of
pro-action, laziness, overconfidence, lack of accountability, inapt attitude,
disrespecting power of time and environmental changes keeps people from
addressing what seems obvious. It is similar closing eyes and believing that
storms have stopped. What temporarily seems like a ‘milking’ opportunity,
becomes a meaningless pursuit for the undesired.
What results is remorse, frustration, emotional trauma
and low self- esteem for a lifetime beyond a point in time. Externalizing may
only be a vehicle to keep responsibility for self- action somewhere else.
Happiness is one’s own sphere, and thus self-defined. Thoughtful,
conscious, mindful discovery of these goals that lead one to happiness last for
a lifetime and assign a new meaning to an individual, holistically.
